“Models and counter-models: American Society in the Twentieth Century.”

This course aims at understanding how American society evolved throughout the twentieth century. Special emphasis will be laid on how “the American way of life” became a consensual social model until the second half of the century, when various protest movements (counter-culture, the civil rights movement, women’s emancipation, etc.) started to shatter “mainstream America”.

Bibliographie

Shi, David E. & Tindall, George B. America: A Narrative History. New York: Norton. Any edition (as long as it is oneof the “brief” ones).

Autre possibilité :
Norton, Mary Beth, David M. Katzman, et al. A People and A Nation: A History of the United States. Boston: Houghton Mifflin. Any edition.

Perspectives on Modern America: Making Sense of the Twentieth Century. New York: Oxford University Press, 2001.
