PhD Programs

The doctorate or PhD is a research degree that can be undertaken immediately after a master’s degree or in continuing education. Doctoral study at UVSQ, as in all French higher education institutions, is organized through doctoral schools. The recommended period of study for a PhD is three years, which can be extended by special dispensation granted by the doctoral advisor and head of the Doctoral School, and upon approval from the university president. PhD students participate in the courses, seminars and internships required by their doctoral school.

Students prepare their dissertation within one of eleven Paris-Saclay doctoral schools:

• in one of the research laboratories associated with the school, with the agreement of the authorities concerned
• under the supervision and responsibility of an advisor – a senior faculty member who is authorized to supervise research at UVSQ.

PhD students participate in the courses, seminars and internships required by their doctoral school.

As a rule, the doctorate is awarded when the candidate passes a public defense of the dissertation.
